our first look at Yuzu vs Nathan :hachimaki::hachimaki::hachimaki:

I'm actually slightly scared. I'm sorry :slinkaway:

I know Yuzu vs Nathan is the big men's rivalry for this event, and Yuzu competing is a big draw in itself, but what are the prospects for Russia's top contender Mikhail? I heard people say this event to Mikhail is like Yuzu to NHK so I don't even know the guy but I hope he podiums.

The only thing I know about Mikhail is that he is one of the men that has a beautiful 4lutz. I don't think he ever used it though. He just might have too during this competition.

I kind of like what I've seen of Kolyada, but I don't think he's at the Nathan - or even less Yuzu - level. But who knows?

And I'm curious... have Yuzu and Denis been in practice together again since Boston? I know they said they got over their issues there, I'm just curious. ^_^

For me it's not Yuzu vs Nathan that I'm scared about, but the power of the federations if someone flips this into Japan vs USA. If Nathan deserves the win and Yuzu bombs, power to him, and both skaters deserves their wins, but the media play this time around good or bad might blow the roof off. Nathan didn't start last year as a top contender, but this year as a top contender and with already one international win over Yuzu it's about momentum and hype and a different story for all of us.

Edit: Even if it's against Nathan here I don't wish for Yuzu to peak too early and skate the skate of his life here though just to curb the naysayers, unless he's going to be consistent for the rest of the season beginning from here then by all means.

I like Nathen but I am already seeing that comments that he is better then Yuzu cus he does all those quads at that age. I quickly exit that comment section. :slinkaway:

This reminds me... Allow me to sink into my usual state of bitterness and saltiness for a moment-

Also apparently since Yuzu hasn't landed a 4lz on camera he shouldn't even try to bring it and he's nowhere near the top anymore in competitiveness or talent or something. (I'm exaggerating a lot here tbh, don't mind me.)

And now back to the fangirling- omg that just reminded me that this will be first time we will see (hopefully) a beautifully landed 4lz from Yuzu! And the newish chopin costume. And the ex for the gala. I'll try to live through the finger biting for that!

In addition to the men, which I'm obviously very very excited for, I'm excited to see how Mirai Nagasu will do in her first GP of the season. I know she's trying really hard to build a body of work so the GP circuit will be very important for her. And of course, that 3A has been improving nonstop! I want to see her finally land a beautiful, clean one! And rotate the rest of her triples, too, since JO was pretty lenient on that.

I'll be holding my breathe on Mariah Bell because she's never been consistent. She had one good skate at Skate America last year which gave her enough momentum to make it to Worlds, but I think she's lost a lot of it since then. But she can get it back if she skates well here.

Also excited to see if Wakaba can gain some consistency. She can rack up huge points and if she does she'll be virtually guaranteed an Olympic spot, but she needs to make the final first.

I'm also excited to see how Elena Radionova will do, given her coaching change which came at a time that basically said "I want to be on that Olympic team and I will sacrifice anything to get there." But the first few competitions + test skates haven't really shown many of the changes she desperately needs like now. She's keeping her SP, right? It's a little bit weird to me that she's keeping her SP and yet hasn't made noticeable improvements because that lack of progress really shows. So I'm excited to see if we'll be seeing anything different at CoR!

I thought he landed a ratified one in a recent senior B. Saw on GS that he's struggling though? Sad.

Looking at the list of of men competitors for this event, a lot of skaters I want to do well (not that I ever wish the opposite, but) or I'm super curious about.

Anyone who says that needs to learn the difference between quantity and quality.

It will be interesting to see how Deniss Vasiljevs is progressing with SLs coaching.  I have mixed feelings about the ladies - it's the start of the Olympic campaign in earnest and it's going to be so important for the Japanese and Russian girls to put down some kind of marker. I hope they manage to keep their nerves and we have a good competition with no meltdowns ( though I realise it's unlikely)

Yes, Mikhail landed the 4Lz at the Ondrej Nepela Trophy a couple of weeks ago. Sadly, he fell on the jump at Finlandia, and after that mistake he completely bombed his free skate and ended the competition off the podium. If he can skate two good programs at Rostelecom, then he might get a medal (a bronze, probably).
